-A friend of Basquiat
Artistic creativity and bold intelligence are painted through the documentary, Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child. The film, produced by Tamra Davis, serves as a time machine to the rough, eccentric streets of New York City in the late 1970’s and 80’s. Capturing the true essence of the street life movement, the documentary focuses on the individual who was the king of it all, Jean-Michel Basquiat. The famous artist was a revolutionary in the art scene, a and leader in the movement known as Neo-Expressionism. Inhabiting the epicenter of artistic creativity, Basquiat lived the epitome of the bohemian lifestyle in NYC, lacking any job or money. At the budding age of 18, Basquiat began his career in graffiti and quickly picked up drawing and painting, creating his artwork on anything and everything he found on the streets. Utilizing bold colors and vocabulary, Basquiat channeled inspirations from artistic, racial, and sexual influences. This genius child collected ideas from culture both past and present, sifting them through his mind to generate new ideas. The craze following his work was a whirlwind of praise, creating an overwhelming overload of fame and fortune, eventually leading to his death at the tender age of 27.
The astonishing documentary displays the captivating personal interviews, as well as film and photographs from the peak of Basquiat’s career. The film enraptures the viewer into this world of street culture, and the new wave of artistic brilliance. A visual masterpiece, the documentary will woo you with Basqiuat’s groundbreaking brushstrokes and charismatic personality, just as the artist did with so many others in his time.

The historic NYC landmark, Sunshine Theater, is currently housing a controversial film titled Exit Through the Gift Shop. The satirical documentary by Banksy, an anonymous street artist, unveils the true story behind the street art phenomenon. Thierry Guetta, also known as Mr. Brainwash, is portrayed in an exposed light through the eyes of his street art peers. Starting his career as his peers’ cameraman, Guetta learns the trade and gains his artistic inspiration. When Banksy encourages the budding artist to create his own art, things go awry. Guetta, or MBW, creates an artistic business overnight, provoking doubtful comments from fellow street artists. Questionably selling into consumerism, MBW’s lucrative career is put on display for the viewer’s discretion. Many theories have arisen surrounding this melodramatic plot; some even believe Mr. Brainwash and Banksy are the same individual. The film questions who is playing the joke, or whether the joke is on us. Whatever opinion you hold, this clever documentary serves as a looking glass to artistic works, many of which have been destroyed. The documentary leaves the viewer in control of what is reality or art, however it will sure to have you smirking as you Exit Through the Gift Shop.
