Viola Frey is considered one of the 20th century’s most influential sculptors, emerging during the 1950s. She worked primarily with ceramics, deconstructing form and injecting sculptural values and political messages. Frey’s quirky fascination with mass-produced ceramic figurines, which she collected from flea markets, led to the creation of her bricolage assemblages. Her oversized male and overdone female figures counter the sentimentality that is typical of the genre, addressing issues of gender and power in America.
